A brief look at our History
AkzoNobel is known as much for its innovation and creativity as for its products and people. Underlying all these have been the inherent values of dedication, commitment, trust and responsibility that have shaped the organisation through the decades.
Let us turn the hands of time to some hundred years ago; the year is 1911, when Brunner Mond & Co commenced its operations in India by opening a trading office in Calcutta (now Kolkata) to sell alkalis and dyes. Later on in 1926, Brunner Mond & Co, combined with 3 other companies to form Imperial ChemicaI Industries in the UK. In 1929, the name of the Indian entity was changed to Imperial Chemical Industries (India) Ltd, and subsequently changed to Crescent Dyes & Chemicals India Ltd. This was followed by a period of sustained expansion, diversification and growth leading to the formation of
The Alkali and Chemical Corporation of India Ltd, in 1939,
Indian Explosives Ltd, in 1954, and
Chemicals and Fibres of India Ltd in 1961.
With each company pioneering introduction of state of the art products and technologies in the country, in diverse areas ranging from Ammonia/ Urea, Industrial Explosives, Polythene, Polyester Fibres, Plastics & Specialties, Agrochemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Paints.
As part of the science and technology based ICI Group seeking to drive excellence in its chosen areas, the above companies came together to establish the ICI India Research and Technology Centre in Thane in 1976 (originally known as Alchemie Research Centre).
As part of corporate re-structuring to drive efficiency, the above companies were amalgamated under the banner of Indian Explosives Ltd in 1984, consequent to which the Company’s name was changed to IEL Limited in 1985 and then to ICI India Limited in 1989 to reflect its association with the international parent.
Over the years, the company saw more consolidation, restructuring and divestment. There are many more stories of growth and expansion of products and markets, of people and their dreams, with a fair mix of re-structuring and divestments. Then came 2 January 2008, the day AkzoNobel NV acquired Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., the holding company of ICI India Limited, through a scheme of arrangement under section 425 of the UK Companies Act 1985. The name of the Company was changed to its present name, AkzoNobel India Limited, in February 2010.
In 2012, 3 other AkzoNobel Group companies operating in India were merged under the umbrella of AkzoNobel India Limited, to make it the only integrated Paints and Coatings company in India with presence in all segments of the Paints & Coatings space, with a relative small Chemicals’ portfolio. The chemicals business was hived off in 2018, thereby making the company a focused Paints & Coatings company.
As at end of 2018, the company has 5 operating sites in India, with offices and depots spread across the country.
